Apple’s been working on its own 5G modems, and it looks like we’re getting closer to seeing them in the top-tier iPhones. This year, they put their first one, the C1, in the iPhone 16e. But, if you’re waiting for it in the Pro models, you’ll have to be a bit more patient.
Word is, Apple’s planning to use their next-gen modem, the C2, in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. That’s what analyst Jeff Pu is saying. He thinks we’ll see it in 2026. This lines up with other reports we’ve heard, too.
The current C1 chip is pretty interesting. It uses different tech for different parts, and tests show it’s really efficient. It uses less power than the Qualcomm modems in other iPhones. Apple was even thinking about putting it in the new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, but that might not happen now.
So, what about the regular iPhone 18? That’s the big question. Will it get the C1, or will Apple stick with Qualcomm for another year? It’s hard to say for sure.
Honestly, it makes sense that Apple’s taking its time. The modem is a super important part of a phone. They want to make sure their own chip is just as good, or better, than what Qualcomm makes. While the C1 is fast, it’s still missing some of the really high-speed 5G stuff.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple starts using their modems in other devices first, like iPads or Apple Watches, before putting them in all iPhones. That way, they can work out any bugs and get it just right.
